In Michigan, getting a cottage ready for winter means taking the dock out of the water, amongst other important tasks. Pulling our old dock out of Marble Lake in Quincy, Michigan was particularly challenging due to the marl on the lake bottom — great stuff for anchoring the dock posts, but awful to deal with when removing them.
It took us a rookie season or two to learn that the key to a succesful Winter storage is preparing for a Spring opening of the cottage. For the dock, this means storing everything — dock posts, most importantly — in order to eliminate the guessing, and the extra hauling it brings, come Spring.
I took these with my first digital SLR, a Nikon D40. I love looking back at them for that reason, and because they always remind me of the old cottage and the great times we had putting that dock in the water…and taking it out.
